Exercise On The Rise Among Older Americans

I had a 6-year-old and I didnt want to be an old slug dad who couldnt keep up with the kids. Cooke began running, and now completes marathons with finish times in the 3 -hour range. Most people do less physical activity the older they get. Only one in five American adults overall exercises enough, as defined by guidelines established by the federal Department of Health at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity, plus muscle-building activity at least twice a week. By their mid-50s it is around one in six, and only one in seven after age 65, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But while only a small share of people are exercising enough, the percentage of those exercising after age 65 has been rising. As recently as 1998, only 6 percent of Americans over 65 routinely exercised up to federal levels, according to the CDC. Over the next decade, it doubled.

Exercise: Prepare well and success is a guarantee

As always, obtain your physician’s approval before starting or modifying your training program. Do your research before purchasing any fitness equipment or services, and use good judgment when following any nutrition program. TIP 1: HAVE A PLAN I’ve said it before, but embarking on a fitness program or trying to achieve established goals without having a solid plan is like building a house without blueprints, or going hiking without a map. With fitness goals, it’s important to establish your starting point with a baseline assessment of relevant measures (body weight, strength, flexibility, endurance, speed, etc.) and then solidify your targets. The more specific the target, the easier it is to know you’ve achieved it. It’s also necessary to identify progressive short-term goals that represents milestones along the way toward the ultimate success. Your plan must include the kind of exercise you’ll be performing, the schedule of training and the location or equipment needed to perform the exercise.

What Science Really Says About Exercise and Sleep

After months of not going to the gym because I was “too tired,” I’d had enough. It didn’t look like I’d get a good night’s sleep anytime soon, so it was time to shove my excuse – although valid – aside and start working out again. I needed whatever mental boost I could get! Imagine my surprise when I woke up a couple weeks after getting back in the gym feeling refreshed. Nope, my baby didn’t magically start sleeping through the night . So why did I feel a little bit of my old pep returning?
